The Mead Art Museum holds the art collection of Amherst College, among the most selective and most diverse liberal arts institutions in the United States, founded in 1821 and committed to the education of its 1,600 students. The Mead serves Amherst’s educational mission by helping to make its over 16,000-object collection relevant to teaching and research across the disciplines through special exhibitions, events, publications, and class visits. The Museum serves a wider public by bringing any curious visitor into contact with original works of art and with leading thinkers drawn from the Amherst campus and beyond, always free of charge and in a facility that is fully accessible.
The Mead occupies its original building opened in 1949 (renovated in 1999-2001) established with funds bequeathed by architect William Rutherford Mead, Amherst College Class of 1867. Eight galleries feature regularly changing installations and special exhibitions spanning a wide range of historical periods, national schools, and artistic media. Highlights of the permanent collection include American and European old masters, an English Baroque room, ancient Assyrian carvings, Russian modern art, West African sculpture, Japanese prints, and Mexican ceramics. Visitors may see works not currently on view in the William Green Study Room.

The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum is one of the oldest teaching museums in the country. Its founding in 1876 was marked by the gift of Albert Bierstadt's majestic painting Hetch Hetchy Canyon. Since then, the collections have grown to approximately 15,000 objects ranging from antiquity to the present.
Dedicated to providing firsthand experience with works of significant aesthetic and cultural value, the Museum develops exhibitions and programs that aim to provide aesthetic enjoyment, stimulate inquisitive looking, and encourage understanding of the artistic achievements represented by a diversity of cultures.

Established in 1975 as the campus museum to serve as a peer to the Five-College Museums (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges), the University Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Center complex, is unique in our region with its focus on contemporary national and international art.
The Gallery maintains a Permanent Collection of approximately 2,600 objects with an emphasis on drawings, prints, and photographs from the second half of the 20th century to the present. Selections from the Collection are regularly incorporated into the exhibition program and frequent use is made of the Collection for purposes of study and research by classes from the Five College area.
Hampshire College
The Hampshire College Art Gallery has been in operation since the college opened in 1970. The gallery functions primarily as an exhibition space concentrating on, but not limited to, the visual arts. First and foremost, the mission of the gallery is to support the teaching functions of the college.
The gallery's active program of exhibitions includes, in addition to the more traditional media, environmental installations; dance and performance pieces; and video presentations. The exhibits feature work by graduating students, fine arts faculty, and emerging regional artists, as well as by contemporary artists of national and international stature. The gallery also seeks to support pedagogical investigations outside the visual arts by occasionally mounting shows in the fields of urban history, the natural sciences, communication studies, and ethnography. This exhibition program is supplemented by periodic gallery talks by visiting artists and scholars. Hampshire also maintains a small art collection that is displayed primarily in administrative office spaces.

Monday-Friday: 10:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m.
Closed Saturday
Sunday: 2—5 p.m.
The gallery is located in the lower level of the Harold F. Johnson Library building.
